East Side Learning Center

*Pax Christi Justice Grant Recipient for 2008 in the amount of $25,000
What is East Side Learning Center? THE EAST SIDE LEARNING CENTER is an educational ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Pax Christi has supported this project with great success in the past. Originally, this project was piloted with 19 children and about 25 volunteers and one Sister. This last year, individualized tutoring was provided for 171 children through the support of over 100 volunteers and 18 professional tutors. All children receive tutoring three times a week, and over half receive tutoring four times per week. They also address the larger issues of how to involve parents in the reading progress of their children by having parents attend tutoring sessions and receive materials to use with their children at home. This model has become the chosen provider for K-4th grade tutoring for the public schools of St. Paul. The center has individual learning areas where the tutor and the student spend their time. Educator Dr. James Connors once said that "No significant learning can take place without a significant relationship." When interviewing for the grant, we could see this learning relationship in action.

*What is a Justice Grant Recipient? Since Pax Christi Catholic Community was founded just over 25 years ago, the community has set aside a portion of its weekly Sunday collection, which now stands at 10%. These funds support works of mercy and justice in the wider Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area and beyond. The majority of the Justice Tithe is distributed through the Pax Christi Justice Grants Program. $2 million in grants have been made to nonprofit organizations since 1995. All Justice Grants are made for purposes that reflect Roman Catholic social teaching and moral standards.
